From unknown Boston gym to #1 — and 68% more leads
Back Bay Fit had the coaches, the results, and the community. What they had online in 2022 was a broken website, no local rankings, and no way to turn digital interest into booked sessions. We rebuilt everything — and turned Back Bay Fit into one of the most visible personal training brands in Boston.
A quality Boston gym that the internet had never heard of
When we took on Back Bay Fit in 2022, the problems were visible immediately. The website had design issues that made it difficult to use and impossible to convert. There was no local SEO strategy, no GBP optimisation, no content covering the topics their target clients were searching, and no way to capture or follow up on leads digitally. In one of Boston's most competitive neighbourhoods — surrounded by established gyms and national fitness brands — being invisible online meant losing potential clients every single day.
- Website design problems — poor UX, low conversion, not built to rank
- No local SEO strategy — invisible in all Boston neighbourhood searches
- No keyword mapping — wrong terms targeted, key opportunities missed
- No GBP optimisation — missing from local map pack results
- No content strategy — no topical coverage for personal training queries
- No local city pages — not appearing for any Boston neighbourhood searches
- No social media presence — no channel for brand building or content
- No lead capture system — no automated follow-up or booking flow
- No ad strategy — paid traffic channel completely unused
Before a strategy, comes the full diagnosis
The website had fundamental design and structural problems. We collected imagery from the client and rebuilt the site to fix both the visual experience and the technical foundation. Running Microsoft Clarity gave us real behavioural data — showing exactly how users were interacting with the site, where they were dropping off, and what changes would actually improve engagement and conversions.
A full keyword mapping exercise identified the exact terms Back Bay Fit needed to target across four categories: branded navigational, geo-targeted local, informational fitness and training, and transactional booking-intent. Key opportunities identified:
- "Personal trainer back bay boston" — high intent, achievable with a dedicated page
- "Why are powerlifters fat" — high-volume informational for blog topical authority
- All Boston neighbourhood keywords — zero competition at local level
- "Strength training for hypermobility" — niche query, zero local competition
Boston personal training competitors were ranking on the back of content volume, consistent GBP activity, and local page coverage. The gap for Back Bay Fit was not training quality — it was digital execution and content depth across the full topical map of personal training and fitness. Every competitor advantage was replicable with the right strategy.
No automated lead capture or booking system existed. Enquiries came in manually with no follow-up — driving more traffic to a leaking pipeline produces poor return. GHL was identified as the right platform for chatbot, booking, and lead management, and was prioritised in Phase 1 alongside the site rebuild.
